Primer Inserting Machine for 23 mm Ammunition
Fully pneumatic automatic primer inserting machine for 23 mm cartridge cases with integrated seating-depth inspection, crimping and lacquer application.

Fabrit designed and built a fully pneumatic automatic primer inserting machine for 23 mm cartridge cases. The machine replaced a previously manual pressing operation, improving process repeatability, integrated quality control and production safety.
The complete system automatically performs primer insertion, crimping, seating-depth inspection and lacquer application within one controlled production cycle.
Challenge
The previous primer insertion process was carried out using a manual press. This limited production efficiency and made product quality strongly dependent on operator experience and consistency.
The customer required an automated machine providing stable primer insertion parameters, automatic verification of primer seating depth and operation adapted to an explosion-hazardous production environment.
Implemented solution
- fully pneumatic machine architecture,
- automatic primer insertion into the cartridge case,
- automatic crimping after primer insertion,
- measurement and verification of primer seating depth,
- automatic lacquer application around the crimp circumference,
- integrated quality control within the production cycle,
- machine design adapted to the requirements of an explosion-hazardous working environment.
Results
The primer insertion process was fully automated and its operating parameters became stable and repeatable. Integrated seating-depth inspection reduced the risk of incorrectly assembled components and removed a significant part of the operator-dependent quality variation.
The pneumatic machine architecture and the project-specific safety measures allowed the system to be adapted to the requirements of the production environment.
FABRIT scope
- technological process concept,
- mechanical design of the machine,
- pneumatic system integration,
- quality inspection system development,
- adaptation to the explosion-hazardous environment,
- assembly, commissioning and process optimisation.
